PLAN YOUR MANTEL

How to style your mantel like a designer

It’s tempting to give all the attention to the Christmas tree, but the mantel is equally important. A well-designed mantel can not only compliment the tree, but it helps spread the cheer throughout the room.  We think you’ll agree that it’s always worth the effort to invest in more than one festive focal point and we’re here to guide you through each step.

Step 1: Garlands and greens, stems and berries

Choose long swags of real or faux olive leaf, eucalyptus, myrtle, cedar or pine (to name a few--it’s hard to go wrong) and simply drape them along your mantel, letting the ends hang evenly on either side. If your greens don’t already have variety, sticking a few sprigs or weaving a garland of bright pip berries throughout adds color, volume and interesting texture. Look for flocked or glittery branches or go natural.

Step 2: Accessories

There are two types of accessories to add to your mantel. Ideally, you’ll want to include a combination of both. Low, bulkier items like pinecones or round ornaments add visual weight, while taller, slender items like taper candles or spindly pine trees add height and drama.

Step 3: Trimmings

To complete the look, add some tactile touches. Stockings are a must and are easy to accessorize with knotted ribbon or bells strung on strips of fabric. Ribbon and fabric are some one of the easiest ways to update your look from year to year.
